About Computer-Based Testing

The FTCE and FELE are offered on computer at flexible times and locations throughout the year.

Minimal computer and typing skills are required to complete the computer-based tests. You need to be comfortable with a Windows environment, using a mouse (including clicking, double-clicking, dragging, and scrolling), and typing at a rate that will allow you to complete the assignment in the allotted time (approximately 30 words per minute).

Registration

To register, select "Register Now." For a list of computer-based test sites, see "Test Sites."

Computer-based testing registrations can be changed or canceled online by the examinee for any reason up until the 24 hours before the testing appointment with no additional fees or penalties. See "Changing/Canceling Your Registration" for instructions for changing or canceling a computer-based testing appointment.

At the Test Site

In computer-based testing, examinees complete the tests by selecting answers on-screen to multiple choice questions and typing or recording a response to a performance assessment component, if applicable. The following tests require the examinee to type a response to an essay assignment:

  • General Knowledge Essay subtest
  • English 6–12
  • Middle Grades English 5–9
  • French K–12
  • German K–12
  • Spanish K–12

If you have a disability that prevents you from being able to type an essay, you may submit a request for alternative testing arrangements, see "Registering for Alternative Testing Arrangements."

After being seated for your computer-based test, you will complete a tutorial before taking the actual test. The tutorial demonstrates how to move from question to question, how to mark and change answers, and how to go back and review previously answered or skipped questions. If the test you are taking includes a recorded component or a performance component, you will be shown how these questions will be presented and how to record your responses during the actual test.

Note that, while it is highly unlikely, computer screens may occasionally freeze. If this occurs, once the problem is resolved you will continue testing where you stopped; your test will automatically begin where the interruption occurred, and the computer's internal clock will be accurate. You will not lose any testing time.

You will be provided with an erasable notepad and pen for use during the test. For certain tests, you will also be provided with a calculator; see "Test Selection" for details. See "Reporting to the Test Site" and "Test Site Rules" for details about the day of the test, including information about identification and security policies.

Score Reporting

At the conclusion of your test, you will receive your unofficial score results for the multiple-choice questions. If you took a test with a performance component, you will receive a "Receipt of Completion."

Unofficial score results will not be provided for tests experiencing score report delays. See "Score Reporting" for more information, including a list of test fields currently affected by score report delays.

Your official score report will be provided to you according to the procedures and timelines outlined in "Score Reporting."

If you do not pass the test or if you attend a score verification session, you must wait 31 days before retaking the test.
